DigitalBridge Launches VoIP Over WiMAX
02 Oct, 2008
DigitalBridge Communications (DBC) announced the first commercial launch of VoIP service over a WiMAX network at the WiMAX World conference in Chicago. The new voice product will be available in 15 DBC markets in Idaho, Indiana, Montana, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming. “DBC is proud to be leading the way again with our launch of WiMAX voice Internet service in the U.S.,” said Kelley Dunne, CEO of DBC in a company statement. DBC will market the voice service for $29.99 under their existing BridgeMAXX brand. DBC uses Alvarion WiMAX equipment and the Alianza hosted voice platform for the voice portion.
The deployment illustrates the potential competitive impact posed by WiMAX service providers. The ability for these new entrants to offer a competitive double play bundle of voice and broadband alone may make some waves in the markets they serve. But when you add the additional value of 4G mobile broadband to the equation, WiMAX may indeed prove to be a formidable contender. DBC is providing early insight into these possible implications.

Time to Prepare for DOCSIS 3.0 is Now
07 Aug, 2008Second quarter results for broadband growth were a tad underwhelming. There are any number of factors which probably contributed to this slowdown, with the economic slowdown and housing crisis certainly towards the top of the list. But growth is also slowing because broadband penetration has grown considerably over the past few years, now ranging somewhere between 50% to 60% (depending on who you ask), and is beginning to slow down. There certainly is more room for growth, but at some point in the near future, broadband penetration will slow even more as it approaches saturation. It’s anyone’s guess what saturation is, but I would bet somewhere around 75% penetration of households (as a national average - individual markets will vary widely). From a service provider’s point of view, that suggests that posting continuing net adds of broadband customers will increasingly involve convincing a competitor's broadband customer base to switch service.
