CHESAPEAKE, Va., Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Cox Communications today announced that its gigabit internet service for residential customers is coming to Virginia. The company will offer speeds 100 times faster than the average speed in the U.S. today.
Cox is the first national communications provider in Virginia to commit to a residential gigabit Internet strategy. The company made the announcement outside one of the new home sites at the Viridian Reserve at Hickory in Chesapeake where the service will first be available in Virginia.
“We are excited about our road map to offer gigabit speeds to all of our residential customers,” said Cox Communications President Pat Esser. “We are deploying new technology and infrastructure that will offer our customers the choice of gigabit speeds in all markets we serve.”
Cox will expand the availability of residential gigabit internet speeds to new developments across Virginia and in Cox locations across the country. The company said the service launched this month in parts of the Phoenix Metropolitan area. It will have gigabit speeds in all of its markets by the end of 2016. Cox has been deploying gigabit speeds to businesses for more than 10 years.
“Cox has been the digital communications leader in our markets for the past two decades, leading on choice and availability and working to continually improve broadband for all customers,” said Esser. “We will continue to invest in our network and our product capabilities to help our customers connect to the things they care about most.”
With speeds as fast as 1,000 megabits per second, gigabit speeds from Cox also will deliver a more powerful home network and rich broadband enabled services to customers.
“We are proud of our long-standing commitment to the Hampton Roads community,” said Gary McCollum, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Virginia. “Cox is driven by our customer feedback and we will continue our investment to deliver what customers have come to expect from us: industry leading products and services and a superior customer experience.”
Today’s announcement follows the increased speeds for subscribers of the two most popular tiers of Internet service for the company. Earlier this year, Cox High Speed Internet Preferred was increased from 25 megabits per second to 50 megabits per second. Cox High Speed Internet Premier increased from 50 megabits per second to 100 megabits per second. These tiers represent more than 70 percent of Cox’s high-speed internet customers. Committed to offering access and choice, Cox has increased broadband speeds more than 1,000 percent over the past 13 years.
In the last 10 years, Cox has invested more than $15 billion in its communities through infrastructure upgrades to deliver video, phone and high-speed Internet and home security and automation service to homes and businesses in the company’s service area. Additionally, the company gives tens of millions of dollars annually in cash and in-kind contributions to support the communities in which it operates.
