Pennsylvania and Oklahoma, with scores of 99.02 (out of 100) and 97.16, respectively, are the states in which people are most likely to engage in activities without their phones, according to a survey and report by Office Recovery.
The remainder of the top ten are Oregon (97.09), Maine (97.04), New Mexico (96.88), Arkansas (96.60), Nevada (96.00), Maryland (95.91), Connecticut (95.66), and West Virginia (95.29).
The report surveyed more than 2,000 residents of the fifty states to find what made them not use their phones (hence, left their phones “lonely”). Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming were not included due to a lack of responses. Points were awarded based on the responses and the final numbers were adjusted by state and reported on a scale of 100.
Other key points of the report about lonely phones:
- The average American can only comfortably go about 45 minutes without checking their phone.
- Only 39% of Americans actively practice safe driving by putting their phones away.
- 70% of Americans keep their phones within arm’s reach while they sleep.
- Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Oregon residents use their phones the least.
- Delaware, New York, and Louisiana residents use their phones the most.
The report also looked at what diversions led people to stop using their phones. The reasons: Having sex (77.33%), praying/meditating (65.52%), taking a bath (58.61%), work meetings (49.16%), driving (38.69%), attending a wedding (36.39%), being at a salon (36.27%), being on a date (33.52%), using the bathroom (32.88%), working out (30.46%), being at the beach (30.25%), hiking (29.67%), being at a concert (27.86%), dining at a restaurant (27.59), being at a party (19.27%), eating dinner (18.13%), eating breakfast (17.65%), watching TV/movies (15.76%), shopping (11.26%), eating lunch (10.88%), hanging out with the family (9.83%), and hanging out with friends (8.87%).
People do myriad things with their phones. This doesn’t mean, however, that they are sanguine about how they and the networks they are on perform. Last month, the “American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) Telecommunications, Cell Phone, and Smartwatch Study 2025” found that user satisfaction for cell phones has dropped 4% to 78 (out of 100).
