T-Mobile scored highest in the categories of “Fastest Mobile Network,” “Most Consistent Network,” and “Top Rated Mobile Network” according to Ookla’s Speedtest Connectivity Report for January through June 2024.
Using Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data, T-Mobile had a median download speed of 234.82 Mbps, more than double the median download speeds of AT&T (109.28 Mbps) and Verizon (103.11 Mbps).
T-Mobile also scored the highest for consistency. Ookla tests whether samples sent over the network meet or exceed a threshold of 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload throughput. 86.6% of T-Mobile’s samples met or exceeded the threshold, compared with 83.3% for Verizon and 80.8% for AT&T.
Examining overall consumer rating, on a 5-star scale, T-Mobile came out ahead once again. On average, consumers gave T-Mobile a 3.7-star rating, compared with 3.29 for Verizon and 3.14 for AT&T.
Part of the reason behind T-Mobile’s success is its rapid deployment of 5G. Earlier this year, Ookla reported a median 5G download speed of 287.14 Mbps on T-Mobile’s network, beating both Verizon (224.67 Mbps) and AT&T (145.36 Mbps).
Ookla also measured the speed of mobile networks in various U.S. states and regions, with the top ten speeds on average being recorded in:
- Illinois (163.90 Mbps)
- Rhode Island (157.06 Mbps)
- Washington, D.C. (156.72 Mbps)
- Nevada (148.82 Mbps)
- Utah (141.74 Mbps)
- Minnesota (141.19 Mbps)
- New Jersey (134.78 Mbps)
- Arizona (133.97 Mbps)
- North Dakota (133.19 Mbps)
- Massachusetts (133.01 Mbps)
The top cities for speed were Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Raleigh, Indianapolis, and Nashville.
The report also measured the fixed ISP market, where AT&T Fiber was the overall leader for both speed — with a median download speed of 348.86 Mbps — and consistency, while Verizon was rated highest for video and gaming experience. AT&T Fiber also received the top user ratings, at 3.72 out of 5. This was higher than Verizon at 3.47, Xfinity (Comcast) at 3.05, Spectrum (Charter) at 3.02, and Cox at 2.79.
