Verizon announced it will provide free nationwide Wi-Fi service to its small business customers. This tactic has become quite common for consumer broadband, with Verizon, AT&T, and Cablevision among others offering it to consumer broadband customers. By extending this offer to small business customers, Verizon is raising the bar for its MSO competitors, who are actively trying to grow their own small business market share.
The offer is available to all small business customers who subscribe to business high speed Internet through FiOS or DSL service. Customers are required to download a Verizon Wi-Fi client to take advantage of the offer.
The Verizon Wi-Fi network is made up from about 14,000 hotspots, which is relatively small for a nationwide hotspot network. Perhaps a Boingo acquisition is on the horizon for Verizon?
